The story goes that a group of about 60 ethnic Turks were walking towards Sitia to catch a ship that would take them to Turkey. As they crossed the Lachanas bridge some local Greeks trapped them on the bridge and slaughtered them.

Richtis Gorge is located in Eastern Crete and starts at the traditional village of Exo Mouliana at an altitude of 350 m above sea level with a length of around 5 km from the top to the beach. It has very rich vegetation, old bridges, old water mills and of course Richtis waterfall around 20 m high.. We start our hike from the Lachana bridge.

Richtis Gorge Trail (Φαράγγι του Ρίχτη) The route starts northeast from the village of Exo Mouliana, between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia and follows the bed of the Lachana stream to the north, towards the rocky Richtis beach.

The gorge is about 5 km long and you can reach the stone bridge of Lachanas by car (1,2 km from the central road). From the stone bridge to the waterfall you will need to walk for appr. one hour. From there, you need to walk 30 more minutes to the beach.

It's a green, lush waterfall located in the middle of a forest at the east of the island. From a medium long hike from the parking lot, you will reach the waterfall in about an hour. It is a 'must do' when visiting Crete. Crete is a the biggest island of Greece. Many tourists visit this place every year and I can understand why.
